EV Optimizer — full guide
The EV Optimizer turns goals into spreads. You tell it what a Pokémon must accomplish — survive a specific attack, guarantee a specific KO, outspeed a specific threat — and it searches every nature and stat-point allocation to find the cheapest spreads that satisfy all of it at once. Every damage number comes from a full, mechanics-accurate engine validated roll-for-roll against the standard damage calculator.
0. Stat Points, not classic EVs
The Champions VGC format replaces the familiar 0–252 EV system with Stat Points: every Pokémon is level 50 with maxed IVs, each stat can hold at most 32 points, and the whole spread gets 66 points total. Because the budget is so tight, wasted points hurt more than they ever did in classic VGC — which is exactly why solving for the minimum spread that meets your benchmarks matters. Free points left over after your benchmarks are met are points you can spend on a whole extra dimension of bulk or speed.
1. Pick the Pokémon and its context
Choose the Pokémon, its item, ability, and moveset. Leave Nature on Auto unless you have a reason not to — the optimizer searches across all 25 natures, and the right nature is often the difference between a benchmark being free and being impossible. The Meta Suggestions panel offers common builds and targets drawn from current usage data, which is the fastest way to seed realistic constraints.
2. Add constraints — the heart of the tool
- Survival constraints. "Survive X's move Y" — pick the attacker, its move, and its assumed build. Add the hits you actually fear; each one prunes the space of acceptable spreads.
- KO constraints. "My move must KO target Z" — choose the move, the target, and whether you need a guaranteed OHKO or a 2HKO.
- Speed constraints. "Outspeed W" (or underspeed, for Trick Room). Speed points are the most contested resource in the 66-point budget, so declare these explicitly rather than hoping.
Then press Optimize. The result is a table of feasible spreads — every nature + allocation combination that meets all constraints — ranked so the cheapest options surface first. If nothing is feasible, the tool is telling you something real: relax a constraint, change the item, or accept that this Pokémon cannot do all of those jobs at once.
3. Fine-tune with CALC and SPEED
The CALC tab is a full damage calculator wired to the spread you chose — use it to explore breakpoints the optimizer didn't list, check field conditions (weather, terrain, screens), and stress-test against variants of a threat. The SPEED tab shows a ranked speed-tier table of every Pokémon and spread variant, weighted by usage — the quickest way to decide whether your spare points belong in Speed or in bulk.
4. Export
Export team produces a standard Showdown paste of the finished team, ready to import into a battle simulator or transcribe to a team sheet. If you arrived via "Send team to EV Optimizer" on the Win Rate Identifier, your roster is already loaded — the workflow runs end to end without retyping anything.
5. Choosing good benchmarks
- Benchmark against what you'll actually face: the top usage threats in the Format Rankings are the right defaults, and the Meta Suggestions panel encodes them.
- Guarantee what must be guaranteed. A 93.8% OHKO that your game plan depends on is a coin you will eventually lose. Use guaranteed rolls for plan-critical benchmarks and accept chance only on bonuses.
- Re-solve when the meta moves. Spreads are answers to a specific field. When a new threat rises in usage, add it as a constraint and re-optimize — it costs seconds.
